Vintage, golden brown and blue green katazome, tsumugi, pongee, kimono silk - 59 inches (149.9 cm)

$12.40 $15.50

This listing is for 1 yard and 23 inches (59 inches or 149.9 cm) of fabric. The fabric is a continuous piece.

This beautiful, tsumugi pongee fabric was once part of a kimono. It is in excellent condition and I do not see any stains or holes. There are a few flaws that were created during the dying process. Please read the description to learn about these flaws. This fabric would make an amazing scarf, quilt, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.

This tsumugi silk has a dyed pattern of sakura (cherry blossoms), houses, bamboo, birds and other foliage and flower designs over a golden brown hued background. The dyed pattern has a blue-green hue. Please note that the pattern is not a consistent color but it varies from a lighter turquoise blue to a deep blue-brown color. The intensity of the dyed areas also vary. The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were place in the photo for color comparison.

This fabric was dyed using a stencil dyeing technique (katazome). Katazome employs the use of a stencil and rice-paste resist. This technique can produce very fine designs with crisp edges.

Typical of tsumugi, this fabric is textured and has slubbing. The slubbing gives the fabric a wonderful "bumpy" texture. Tsumugi is created out of "waste silk". This "waste silk" creates the slubbing and texture that is associated with tsumugi.

Since this tsumugi was sewn into a kimono form it is less crisp than unused tsumugi silk and has a nice, fluid, drape with a "cotton-like" feel. Tsumugi resists wrinkles and has a subtle sheen.

*There are some small, yellow spots that were created during the dyeing process. One of these spots can be seen in the 8th photo. I have noticed 3 of these spots on the fabric however they are difficult to see at certain angles so there may be additional ones.

There is a white line where the stencil pattern ended and began again. This line is about 8 inches (20.32 cm) from one end of the fabric and extends across the entire width of the fabric. A photo of this line can be seen in the 9th photo. The red arrow is pointing to the line. *

*I am always willing to provide more information or pictures regarding my fabrics or using/sewing these fabrics. Please do not hesitate to send me a convo if you have any questions.*

I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
