Vintage, Japanese tsumugi, pongee, kimono silk with maple leaves - 65 inches (165.1 cm)

$19.00

This listing is for 1 yard and 29 inches (65 inches or 165.1 cm) of fabric. The fabric is a continuous piece.

This beautiful tsumugi pongee fabric was once part of a kimono. Therefore, this fabric has been used but it is still in very good condition. I do not see any stains. It would make an amazing scarf, quilt, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.

**This fabric has small cuts along the selvage edges. These were made by the seamstress. A photo of one of these cuts can be seen in the 9th picture. These cuts do not extend more than 3/8 inches (.95 cm) from the selvage edge and should not affect how the fabric can be used. **

**Please note that the fabric was folded lengthwise on both the right and left sides. The fabric reflects the light a little differently along these crease lines due to being slightly burnished. This can make the fabric appear a little lighter along these creases. One crease is about 2 inches (5 cm) from the left selvage and the second is about 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) from the right selvage. A closeup of this line, on the left side of the fabric, can be seen in the left photo in the 9th picture. A close-up of the right side of the fabric is seen in the right photo of the 9th picture. These areas are more or less noticeable depending on the reflection of the light. I do not believe that this is fading because these areas only appear lighter when when the light reflects off the crease line.

This silk fabric has a woven design of yellow acer (maple) leaves over a deep, forest green colored background.

Tsumugi is created out of pre-dyed threads. The warp and weft threads are usually different colors (called shot fabric) giving the fabric a wonderful depth of color. Traditionally the weft threads of tsumugi are black. Both the weft and warp threads of this fabric are a green color with dyed sections of yellow. The pattern is then created where these yellow sections of the warp and weft threads are woven together. Some of the weft threads are thicker and a darker green color than the warp threads. This creates a fabric that has a great depth of color that changes in the light. The fabric can appear a light forest green to an almost black color depending on the light.

Typical of tsumugi, this silk has a cotton-like feeling with a very subtle sheen. It is difficult to wrinkle. This fabric also has a very crisp drape that should become more fluid with use.

The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photo for color comparison.

*I am always willing to provide more information or pictures regarding my fabrics or using/sewing these fabrics. Please do not hesitate to send me a convo if you have any questions.*

I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
