Vintage, Japanese tsumugi, pongee, kimono silk with floral and village design - 64 inches (162.6 cm)

$15.00

This listing is for 1 yard and 28 inches (64 inches or 162.6 cm) of fabric. The fabric is a continuous piece.

This beautiful tsumugi pongee fabric was once part of a kimono. It is in excellent condition but it does have one stain. It would make an amazing scarf, quilt, pillow case or skirt. It can be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.

**This item has one stain. This item is being offered at a discounted price due to this stain. The stain is located about 11 inches (28 cm) from end of the fabric and about 5.5 inches (14 cm) from the selvage. A photo of this stain can be seen in the 8th photo. I have not tried to launder this fabric to remove the stain.

A non-blemished section of this fabric can be purchased here:

This fabric has some small cuts on the selvage edges. These were made by the seamstress. A photo of one of these cuts can be seen in the 9th picture. These cuts do not extend more than .25 inches (.6 cm) from the selvage edge and should not affect how the fabric can be used.

Please note that the fabric was folded lengthwise and a crease can be seen on the right side of the fabric at about 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) from the selvage. This can most easily be seen in the second photo. The fabric was ironed but under some light conditions a crease may be still be seen.

This silk fabric has a woven design of blue, yellow, pink, green, silver-gray and lavender colored flowers, trees, mountains and houses over a "mottled" black and white patterned background. The woven design is easier to distinguish from a distance.

I was told that this is Takamachi tsumugi. Takamachi is well known for producing fine tsumugi silks. Although I can not confirm the origin of this fabric it does have a finer texture and lovely sheen that is not seen in other tsumugi silks that I offer. This tsumugi closely resembles "Oshima" tsumugi and has a smoother texture with little to no slubbing.

Tsumugi is created out of pre-dyed threads. The warp and weft threads are usually different colors (called shot fabric) giving the fabric a wonderful depth of color. Traditionally the weft threads of tsumugi are black. Both the weft and warp threads of this fabric are a black color with dyed sections of blue, green, pink, yellow, orange, lavender and white colors. The pattern is then created where these dyed warp and weft threads are woven together. This creates a fabric that has a great depth of color that changes in the light due to the different colored warp and weft threads.

Since the warp and weft threads are dyed a black and white color the background of this silk has a mottled appearance.

Typical of tsumugi, this silk has a cotton-like feeling with a slight sheen. It is difficult to wrinkle. This fabric also has a very crisp drape that should become more fluid with use.

The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photo for color comparison.

I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
